A big thumbs up to both Young Stroke Thrivers NZ , Millie and Amelia, for their very impressive Tennis skills over the weekend. They both did extremely well with the challenging hand/ eye coordination, speed, balance and strength that were put to the test. Well done girls!
Thank you Kevin for volunteering your time and skills in helping Millie and Amelia learn new Tennis skills as well as improve on their existing ones https://www.isportz.com/channel.cfm?channel=58. It wouldn't have been possible without you! And thank you Albany Tennis Park Official for letting use one of your courts free of charge.
Next weekend is Sailability Auckland!

Having shared a few talks recently in Nelson and Auckland, it has literally been like walking down memory lane- a story of great courage and determination as one faces an exciting and unknown future. It marked a new journey in my life that helped shape and mould me into the person I am today!
Here is a video clip from when I was learning to walk again at the age of 13 in 1996. I'm sure there are a few YST who can relate to it :)

2013 Mt Aspiring National Park, Gillespie Pass. 3days, 58km, 1610m high. My first attempt at tramping at this level. Balance, patience, determination were all put to the test. Nothing like a challenge!

Exploring the outstanding wild and remote landscape of New Zealand through the lesser-travelled corners of Mt Aspiriring National Park, challenges many, even more so for me personally! And a challenge is just what I am after= Gillespie Pass. Nearly 60km covered during a 3 days tramping adventure with the highest point being 1610m above sea level. We will be surrounded by stunning New Zealand scenery. It starts in dense native rain forest and steadily climbs into wondrous spectacular alpine paradise which consists of challenging steep climbs, high peaks, spectacular waterfalls, roaring canyons, hanging snowfields, open meadows, breath-taking views of the southern alps/ Mounts Alba, Awful, and Dreadful, testing river crossing, unusual geographic wonders carved by the glaciers, ancient Beech forest and open river flats.
Having never taken part in any tramping before, this experience will test both my survival and physical skills through strength, energy and ultimately my lack of balance. This challenge will take place

We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to capture Kylie during her Contemporary Dance class. Her balance, hand eye coordination, strength and most importantly her positive attitude were truly beautiful and inspiring!
Kylie had a stroke when she was 3 days old, affecting the left side of her body. She hasn't let that stop her living a fun filled life with skiing, tramping, swimming, ballet to name a few sports she regularly takes part in during the 13 years since her stroke.
Thank you Dance Wanaka, Si Williams - Design and Photo and Flashworks Media for capturing Kylie perform her magic. A video will be ready for your viewing in the new year.

"Her mission is to help young stroke survivors “learn that there are no limits in what they can achieve and that there is still a happy and prosperous life that lies ahead of them- even after a stroke at such a young age.”
Maria’s fundraising focus began with the aim of helping another young stroke survivor, McKenzie, who suffered a severe stroke in April 2012 at the age of 12. Maria raised funds to enable Auckland-based McKenzie and her family to experience a winter holiday in Wanaka and the opportunity for McKenzie to undertake adaptive ski lessons at Cardrona Alpine Resort.
The fundraising efforts were so successful that, as well as sponsoring McKenzie’s trip to Wanaka, Young Stroke Survivors NZ has been able to donate additional funds in the amount of $4717.69 to Snow Sports NZ to support its adaptive snow sports programme.
Snow Sports NZ CEO, Marty Toomey, says, “Maria's enthusiasm is inspiring and we look forward to being able to put the generous donation provided by the Young Stroke Survivors NZ Foundation to good use supporting other young stroke survivors. It is truly humbling to see how Maria has embraced adversity and focused her time and energy on helping others who find themselves in a similar situation to what she experienced as a teenager.”
Snow Sports NZ is the national sporting organisation representing the interests of adaptive snow sports. Adaptive snow sports is about adapting equipment and lessons and providing accessible support systems to allow people with a wide range of disabilities to take to the snow and experience the freedom of snow sports. "
Thank you everyone!

Has anyone heard of Medikidz Foundation? No? Don't worry, either had I until a couple of weeks ago thanks to Doctors from the Starship Hospital and the Wilson Centre. The Medikidz are five energetic, larger-than-life superheroes on a mission to help young people understand illness and medical concepts.
MediKidz was founded and continues to this day by paediatric Doctors. MediKidz has 33 current comic book titles on paediatric conditions such as ADHD, Asthma, Epilepsy, Scoliosis, Leukaemia and Cystic Fibrosis. And yes, a book about an older loved one who has had a stroke is due to be finished in November this year :) But the young ones aren't totally forgotten about... after talking to them this morning, we are kick starting the process for a comic story about a child having a stroke to help them understand it all that little bit better.

Enjoy!!! :)
Don from the Stroke Foundation, Michael from Halberg Disability Sport Foundation and Monique from Wons will be having meetings in the coming months about creating an official charity to help all young stroke survivors in NZ get back into the kiwi can do attitude, rehabilitation as well as support for the parents and family. This started out as a one off 'friend helping a friend' learn that there are no limits in what they can achieve with Adaptive Snow Sports being the perfect way to show this. We are sticking to our word meaning that all remaining funds are still going towards the amazing Adaptive Snow Sports to help other young stroke survivors with skiing/ snowboarding, facilities etc as originally promised. Progress is being made with a charity being created as we speak! Exciting!

The picturesque 15km, 1047m above the race start, Motataupu challenge= Tick! Most of the 15km was uneven, rough and rocky, very very narrow steep terrain, which really tested my balance. I was very grateful for the 5? river crossings near the end as the sun was only just starting to show itself. All in all, I made it to the finish line in one piece. Woohoo!!! The first sports related challenge I have taken part in since High School :)
The run starts at Butlers Green, Arrowtown and follows down the true right of the Arrow River. There is a steady climb of around two kilometers up Tobins Track to reach the Crown Terrace, making it's way to the private property of Glencoe Station. A farm track contouring the base of Mount Beetham is followed before climbing again up onto the historic miners water-race and single-track that inspired the Miners Trail race name. The trail sidles high above the spectacular New Chum Creek gorge and emerges at Brackens Saddle with half-way point of the course just a little further up the track. The course reaches a high point above Brackens Gully some 1047m above the race start. From this point, extensive views are revealed, up to the Crown Range. A marked route follows this contour through tussock and snowgrass for approximately two kilometers, north-west toward the Arrow River and revealing new views over the Wakatipu basin to the Remarkables. Once a farm road is met, a steep descent to the river and the Macetown track follows and competitors join the mountain bike and marathon fields on the homeward leg to the Arrowtown finish-line. There are also multiple river and stream crossings over this last section. Fortunately there has been recent rainfall, stream levels were fairly shallower- the water did reach my hips at one stage though! The sound of people and MC's was in the distance which could only mean one thing- the finish line is close by! https://www.facebook.com/motatapu.event

Mt Roy- 1,578 meters above sea level, with 360degree view on Wanaka and it's surroundings on a hot clear blue sky day at 27degrees. Woohoo!
Though unfortunately it resulted in a big and painful blister on my 'not so good' foot. The upside is that I am busy putting together raffle prizes which I will be starting to sell in April. Over $2,000 worth of prizes including Treble Cone and Cardrona passes, Edgewater Accommodation, Billabong backpack plus many more amazing prizes up for grabs.
